A Brief Introduction to Space
Characters don't know this stuff ICly. No metagaming, yo.
There is a war on, a vast war between civilizations that have mastered transdimensional travel. The Ohm, an insectoid race ruled by a vast alien hivemind, are destroying key worlds and causing whole realities to collapse. Heading the effort to stop them are the Daligig, a technologically advanced race pulling together a coalition to oppose the Ohm juggernaut and save everyone.
Bio-arks like the one you're aboard have been dispatched to rescue important people and objects from doomed worlds. Not only have you been saved, but you represent the best and brightest of the multiverse and one of its best hopes for salvation. It is said there is a great technology that can restore everything to the way it was, if only the Ohm can be stopped.
...But few other than the Daligig know that much of this is deception. The Daligig have manipulated the Ohm into these attacks to strategically destabilize the whole framework of the multiverse. They are doing the bidding of a dark entity known only as It that wishes to annihilate everything that is. The bio-arks are the stolen work of other races that the Daligig destroyed or drove into hiding, crushing the last major opposition from any that knew their dark secret. The arks, originally benevolent, are under careful control by the Daligig and the people on board subject to the same lies if they are roused from their sleep.
Except for this one.
Your ship was traveling in the bleed, the swirling infinity between dimensions, when she was suddenly and savagely attacked. Some kind of monster from outside reality bit into her and pulled her into this bubble of reality (like a shark investigating possible food), but she wasn't what it was looking for. She was spat out into a graveyard of other wrecked ships that suffered a similar fate, but she was not killed. The holes in her hull vented all her atmosphere and killed her former crew, but those in the pods were safe. The extensive damage and trauma broke the fetters the Daligig had placed on her mind.
She has roused a number of refugees from the pods, desperately needing their help to stabilize and save her. They are her precious wards, but she is a young ark with little experience. She is wounded, frightened, alone, and only partially understands what's going on in the universe, but she can perhaps recover.
It and the Daligig can still be stopped. The worlds can still be restored. It's not too late.
The fate of everything lies here, with this wounded ship. This crew is her last and only hope to survive and make things right, just as she is theirs.
